About Rescue North Rescue North is a NEW, non-profit ,charitable organization that was quickly created to address the problem of unwanted, abandoned animals in Northwestern Ontario after the closure of the existing regional shelter facility in January 2008. The region is the largest in the province, with an area of over 564,000 sq. kms, yet it has the smallest population and the lowest population density. Much of it is uninhabited, heavily forested wilderness and all communities, which include 51 First Nations, have less than 15,000 people. Some are geographically isolated and only a select few have any animal control by-laws or enforcement. Spay/neuter rates are low, animal neglect and abandonment rates are high, resulting in not just the stray cat problem common to the rest of Ontario, but to a serious stray dog problem, as well. The numbers are overwhelming, as is the condition they are usually found in. These dogs are almost always emaciated, covered in lice, full of parasites, sick or injured requiring costly veterinary care.
Location We are presently looking for a site for a new, shelter facility that not only complies with all applicable regulation and by-laws but is suitable for housing a variety of animals with complex needs.
